Communicate with power by following these tips
Here’s how to keep everything running smoothly ...
Communicating with employees, however
you do it, isn’t a one-size-fits-all matter.
You’ve got to constantly shift in response
to changing circumstances. Here’s how to
keep everything running smoothly:
• Pay attention to other people’s perspective.
Everyone sees the world a little
differently. Get to know your employees
well enough to understand what interests
them, what drives them, what makes
them happy or sad or angry, and anything
else that shapes how they see
• Take time to establish rapport. As busy
as you are, remember to spend a few
minutes checking with employees on
how their work (and their lives) are
going. You’ll demonstrate concern for
their situations, and you’ll build the
kind of trust that ensures their full
engagement and loyalty.
• Be direct. Get to the point when you’re
communicating. Know what you want
to say and get it out with as few words
as possible. Otherwise you’ll waste time
and strain your employees’ patience.
Also, excessive wordiness runs the risk
that your directions will be misunderstood.
• Listen. Listening is the most powerful
form of communication you have.
When employees feel comfortable
talking to you, they’ll be more willing to
ask questions, share ideas, and give
feedback. Make a point of being
open-minded when people want to talk.
